Golden Knights open at home honoring first responders, victims of Las Vegas tragedy

It was a bittersweet start.

Before the Vegas Golden Knights took the ice in their inaugural home game on Tuesday night, the team introduced first responders in an emotional 15-minute ceremony. Doctors, nurses, policemen and firefighters were called out by name, accompanied by Golden Knights players.

There also was a 58-second moment of silence to honor the 58 people killed in the worst mass shooting in American history, which occurred Oct. 1 at a country music concert in Las Vegas — less than a mile from T-Mobile Arena, home of the Golden Knights. The names of the victims were emblazoned on the ice.

The Golden Knights’ home opener honored first responders by name before a 58-second moment of silence to honor the 58 people who were killed in the mass shooting in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Youth Ndamukong Suh Jersey Games in October count just as much as games in December, and with that in mind it isn’t too early to start looking at who may end up being the top seed in the NFC. FPI projects the Eagles to take the top seed in the NFC 34 percent of the time with a victory and only 10 percent of the time with a loss. Carolina is projected to earn home-field 23 percent of the time should the Panthers emerge victorious but only 5 percent of the time should they lose.

Cam Newton (87.6 Total QBR) and Carson Wentz (83.9) own the third- and fifth-highest Total QBRs in the league over that span.

It had been just one game after a 97-win season, and a playoff opener instead of a season-ending decider, but Damian, a D.C. cab driver, had gone dark, into the supernatural space usually reserved for 100-year droughts and Bill Buckner. The Nationals are great during the regular season, he said, resigned. Once the playoffs begin, it’s like, you know, they’re cursed. They can’t do anything.

It was one of those things where you had to kinda sit there and wait.

The Warriors unleash three of the greatest shooters in the entire history of Earth as screen-setters and cutters. Losing an inch is fatal. Switch to survive, and two of those guys — Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant — roast mismatches.

Both the Cavs and Thunder have some history smothering the Warriors with length and bullying them on the glass. Both appear to have moved away from that template, and toward smaller, all-offense lineups geared toward keeping up with Golden State’s scoring machine. The Thunder might be able to thread the needle; they still have Adams, a rude, pointy-elbowed instigator dangerous catching lobs in the pick-and-roll, and the Roberson/George pairing can envelope opposing wings.

But George and Anthony posted career-low offensive rebounding rates last season. Even in ultra-big lineups with George as the nominal 2-guard — think Westbrook/George/Melo/Patrick Patterson/Adams — the Thunder have likely punted an edge they once cherished.

Cellphone service was fleeting at best, but Zarren kept at it — so much so that he carried a battery pack in his front pocket and was essentially tethered to it trying to keep his phone powered on.

The most and least likely NBA rookie extension candidates

Which other 2014 first-round picks will sign contract extensions?

NaVorro Bowman Game Jersey So far, No. 3 overall pick Joel Embiid, No. 14 pick T.J. Warren and No. 19 pick Gary Harris have agreed to extensions of their rookie contracts that will kick in during the 2018-19 season. That leaves a handful of important players still eligible to do so.

Players and teams have until next Monday to agree to extensions, with the alternative being that players finishing out their rookie contracts will become restricted free agents next summer. So who will join the three extensions completed so far? Let’s take a look.

That’s exactly where the Warriors finished, winning 51 games in a loaded conference that featured seven 50-win teams and left a 48-win Suns team out of the playoffs.

Now there’s a real sense of d懈卸j懈写 vu as the NBA is once again unbalanced. The Nuggets are looking up at a swath of star-heavy Western Conference powerhouses and figure to be somewhat of a high-quality afterthought. They also were picked by ESPN’s Forecast panel to finish sixth. But as the new-look contenders try to find a groove early, there’s a real opportunity for the Nuggets to steal some headlines, as they have the NBA’s easiest schedule in October and November, according to ESPN’s Basketball Power Index (BPI).

Breaking news: Stephen Curry and Nikola Jokic do not have similar games. And yet both succeed as offensive wunderkinds, thanks in part to a skill unmatched by any counterpart. Curry’s shooting ability is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. The threat he presents by simply stepping on the floor unlocks defenses in ways that numbers can’t fully articulate.

Bruins center Patrice Bergeron out with lower-body injury

Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron will miss his second straight game Monday against the Colorado Avalanche because of a lower-body injury.

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters that Bergeron is just not ready to play after the veteran center returned to practice Sunday morning.

Authentic Kids Ndamukong Suh Jersey Cassidy said Bergeron will travel with the Bruins on their upcoming three-game West Coast trip but that he remains day-to-day. Bergeron, 32, had 21 goals and 32 assists last season.

Cassidy also announced that defenseman Torey Krug would make his season debut Monday after missing Thursday’s opener with a jaw injury.

There’s video of us after a big win we had at Texas Tech one night and you can see what we were dealing with, West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said of the Mountaineers’ startling 2014 comeback victory at Jones AT&T Stadium. Guys are climbing over an air duct and there’s a wall of lockers right there by the door. It’s like a maze. You think, ‘OK, I can just climb up on top of something so everyone can see me,’ but the ceiling is like 6 feet tall. So you just yell and hope everyone can see you. Hell, I don’t care. If I need to see everyone that bad, we can always just junior-high it and meet in the end zone.

Junior-highing it is a frequently considered solution for another frequent problem. Sometimes the issue isn’t what happens when a visiting team gets to its locker room; it’s getting there in the first place. When most of today’s classic college football venues were built a century ago, opponents would arrive in a school bus with a couple dozen players and a stack of shoulder pads. So those facilities were built without a visiting locker room at all.

Correcting past issues won’t be easy.

Joe Thornton Mens Jersey Rivers also hit Gordon on a 6-yard TD pass in the second quarter and had a 25-yarder to tight end Hunter Henry in the third as the Chargers ended a nine-game losing streak dating to late November.

Manning had given the Giants a 22-17 lead early in the fourth quarter with a 48-yard TD pass to a wide-open Beckham. New York missed the 2-point conversion attempt after being hit with a delay of game penalty.

Manning, who was sacked five times, also threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to backup Roger Lewis Jr. in the third quarter. Orleans Darkwa scored on a 23-yard run and the Giants got a safety in scoring their first first-quarter points this season.

Manning’s attempt to rally the Giants in the final minute ended when he was intercepted by Tre Boston just inside Los Angeles territory.

Roethlisberger on Sunday recorded his first 300-yard game in his past 11 regular-season outings, but most of the yards were hollow, as the Steelers went 0-for-3 in the red zone.

The only Steelers receiver with more than 60 receiving yards was Brown (10 catches, 157 yards), who offered encouragement for his quarterback.

He’s going to come to work this week with a lot of intensity, Brown said. He’s going to bring the best out of all of us, especially after a week like this.

Center Maurkice Pouncey said the offense didn’t help Roethlisberger. Protection should have been cleaner and some receivers fell down on their routes.

There’s no one to blame. We just didn’t play well as an offense, Pouncey said.

For Roethlisberger, the game was, literally, forgettable. Asked about a detail on a play, Roethlisberger said, I don’t remember which one, there were so many.

If I had an answer, we wouldn’t have those problems, Roethlisberger said.

He ranks so consistently in the top 10 of Total QBR that you wonder if the stat was designed for him.

His running ability allows him to make plays other quarterbacks can’t or won’t, and he has had success when the group around him has been strong. Yet, the way his contract was restructured each of the past two years indicates that the Bills want to see more. And with a new coaching staff in place that drafted Nathan Peterman, you wonder whether Taylor is long for Buffalo.

Those who earn their living as NFL experts said about a month ago that the Buffalo Bills were in tank mode as the 2017 season started.

First-year coach Sean McDermott and his players apparently never got that memo.

Following consecutive wins over Denver and defensing NFC champion Atlanta, Buffalo heads to Cincinnati to face the Bengals on Sunday with a 3-1 record and a surprising grasp of first place in the AFC East.

The 49ers have a promising young defense which has played better than the team’s record, though injuries to linebacker Reuben Foster (high ankle sprain) and strong safety Eric Reid (knee) likely will keep them out of the Colts game.

The unit produced six sacks against the Carson Palmer-led Cardinals and will look to enjoy that same success against Brissett and a MASH unit Indianapolis offensive line.

But she’s got me thinking ’bout it, yes, she’s got me on the edge. With that little bit of mystery, she’s a complex kid. And she’s always been so hard to figure out. Yeah, she always likes to leave me with a shadow of a doubt. Tyrod Taylor is better than you think he is, but he does always leave you wondering why he’s not as good as you think he can be.

While one can often find value at quarterback and thus pay down in daily fantasy

A top-10 performer so far in QBR (61.8), passer rating (107.6), yards per attempt (8.3) and touchdowns (7), Kirk Cousins is on his way to a third straight stellar season. Will it be his last in Washington? Without a long-term contract in place, Cousins is playing on the franchise tag for the second year in a row and looks positioned to be a record-breaking free agent come March. Cousins has established himself to the point where Washington has to have great confidence in him. The reason the confidence meter isn’t higher for this team is because it has a big ol’ question mark staring it in the face if Cousins leaves in 2018. Colt McCoy is the backup and not likely the long-term replacement answer.

Limited Kids Josh Reynolds Jersey Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers

While one can often find value at quarterback and thus pay down in daily fantasy, this matchup is simply too savory to ignore for Rodgers. Aside from a Week 1 stalling of the Giants offense, the Cowboys have allowed Trevor Siemian (four touchdowns), Carson Palmer (325 yards and two touchdowns) and Jared Goff (255 yards and two touchdowns) to post big numbers. Rodgers may be without Davante Adams this week (and his starting tackles), but with seven touchdowns over his past two games, there’s little reason to fear that he won’t make good on the steep financial investment. — Field Yates

The Packers went to the quick game in Week 4, with Rodgers throwing for 179 yards on 18-of-26 passing. That was a drop-off for Rodgers after throwing for 300-plus in each of his first three games. However, Rodgers tossed four touchdown passes in that win over the Bears. Remember, the Packers are still a heavy West Coast passing team inside the 20-yard line, and Rodgers gets a favorable matchup this Sunday versus Dallas. This Cowboys defense has allowed eight touchdown passes in its last three games and is giving up an average of 17.3 fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks (23rd in the NFL). — Matt Bowen

Raiders, LT Donald Penn agree to $21M extension

The Raiders and left tackle Donald Penn have agreed to terms on a two-year deal, the team announced Friday. The $21 million extension includes guarantees into 2018, NFL Network reported, citing unidentified sources informed of the situation.

Kids Dominik Hasek Jersey The Raiders persuaded Penn, 34, to end a holdout during training camp with the promise they would negotiate an extension since he was slated to be paid only $6 million in 2017, less than half what some of the NFL’s starting left tackles make.

The new deal appears to show how eager the Raiders are to keep not just Penn happy but also quarterback Derek Carr.

Kids Will Sutton Jersey According to Spotrac (via, even before Penn’s new contract, the Raiders were tops in the NFL in salary-cap dollars ($43 million) spent on on their offensive line.

Remarkably, this was only his third-best single-game fantasy point total: He scored 29.54 in 2016 Week 6 (then starting for the Los Angeles Rams) and 28.60 in 2013 Week (then starting for the Houston Texans). That’s not to say that Keenum should suddenly be trusted for future play in games Bradford is forced to miss nursing a bone bruise in his surgically repaired left knee — Keenum remains a Hail Mary option only in two-quarterback leagues — but it’s a reminder that the Vikings’ passing game as a whole shouldn’t be significantly downgraded when Keenum is called upon to start. If you’ve got Diggs or Adam Thielen you should be especially encouraged.

Dalvin Cook, RB, Vikings: Perhaps the least-celebrated of the rookie running backs in Weeks 1 and 2, Cook managed 27.9 PPR and 22.9 non-PPR fantasy points on Sunday, the second most at the position during the 1 p.m. ET game block. Through three games, he has a 4.7 yards-per-carry average and 10 receptions. Cook was started in 84.7 percent of ESPN leagues in his breakout game.

Alford saw Trufant living up to the standards Quinn preaches.

The new Jacksonville Jaguars running back was 10 years old when Hurricane Katrina ripped through his home town of New Orleans. So he knows exactly what kind of devastation that can cause and donated $50,000 to the relief efforts.

Donating 50,000 to the people in Houston, y’all are in my prayers, we went through Katrina we know the feeling God bless…..

Catanzaro may yet prove to be an unsuccessful signing, but he delivered in his Jets debut by nailing field goals from 48 and 52 yards out.

I can’t think of a more promising way to kick off the 2017 season than to see two of the Raiders’ most glaring weak areas step up. They needed to show these things in Tennessee, because it’s highly unlikely they’ll receive any such test this week against the Jets.

Vic got the ball out and made a hell of a play, Trufant said. And coaches, they always tell us to scoop and score, no matter what. And so I just picked it up and had to go back to running back mode for a split second.

That’s what Coach Quinn preaches about is, coming into today’s game. Just getting turnovers and try to get a score, Alford said. Desmond did all of them like Coach Quinn wanted.

Omar Vizquel Game Jersey Neal noted that it was a team effort.

We just played together. We played as one, Neal said. The defensive line got pressure, and on the back end, we stayed on top.

And Allen said the secondary maintained coverage and gave the pass rush a chance to get to Rodgers.

We ended up doing pretty good in the back end, and (Rodgers) had to come to his second and third read, Allen said. So he ended up trying to transition and go back to the backside, and Vic ended up making a pretty good hit on him. And I guess he threw the ball backwards.

Bruce Arians blames struggles on Carson Palmer, QB responds with big 4th quarter

Coaches in the NFL rarely single out players for blame, but Bruce Arians isn’t one to beat around the bush and was specific about who was costing the Arizona Cardinals early against the Indianapolis Colts.

On the sideline at halftime, Arians was asked why the offense wasn’t clicking. His one word answer: “Quarterback.”

The Cardinals finished the first half against the Colts in a 10-3 hole and Palmer threw an interception in the first half. A week ago, Palmer finished with one touchdown and three interceptions in a 35-23 loss to the Detroit Lions.

His touchdown total isn’t just an all-time mark among tight ends, it’s sixth among all pass catchers and behind only Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Cris Carter, and Marvin Harrison.

Rivers says Gates’ numbers should be even better.

“We see plays from the past years where I just missed him or he got tackled at the one. He should have 125 [touchdowns]. It’ll be exciting,” Rivers told the San Diego Union-Tribune earlier in September. “I’ve thought about it. I think it helps that we’re starting the season with just one to go. It’ll just happen.”

It’s unlikely that Gates’ record will be touched anytime soon. The next closest tight ends on the list after Gates and Gonzalez are Rob Gronkowski and Jason Witten, but they are at just 69 and 64 career touchdowns, respectively.

If Gronkowski continues on his current pace, he could threaten to top Gates in four or five seasons, but the 28-year-old tight end has struggled to stay healthy and hasn’t finished a 16-game season since 2011.nike_broncos_2627
